A Recipe for Real Life

Grandma Ruth’s Home Remedy for Cold Sores

I hope you’ll never have to use this recipe, but I hope you’ll remember it when Real Life descends with all its stress and drama and dehydration, giving you a nasty cold sore to deal with on top of everything else. (Of course you can count on it happening when you’re traveling, when you’ve left your high-powered prescription medicine at home.) But never fear, Grandma Ruth has got you covered. You’ll need:

  1. Alum. (You can find it in the spice aisle; it’s used for pickling.)

  2. Mederma Cold Sore Patches. (Good luck finding this. Not every store carries it.)

Moisten a pinch of Alum with water and dab onto the cold sore several times a day. The alum will draw moisture out of the oozing wound.

After each application of Alum, rinse, dry, and cover the sore with a fresh Mederma Cold Sore Patch.

None of this effort will shorten the duration of the cold sore, but the alum will keep it from getting bigger and oozier, and the Mederma patch will protect it from cracking open and bleeding, and make it a lot less noticeable (from a distance at least).

Not the sexiest recipe I’ve ever shared, but hey, sometimes when Real Life happens, you need an unsexy recipe for an unsexy situation.

Please feel free to share! :)
