Just How Chatty Are Sea Turtles, Anyway?

Sea turtles are not very talkative. Their brains are almost always in a quiet, meditative state, which doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for conversation. They may get a little concerned when they’re getting knocked about by rough waves, but they don’t tend to panic or feel afraid when that happens. Instead, they go from a quiet-resting mode to a quiet-determined mode. As soon as they’ve achieved their goal of getting situated on a bigger rock or in a quieter tide pool, they go right back to meditating.

Sea turtles (and the bigger land turtles too) don’t waste time or energy lamenting what just happened or worrying about what might happen next. They’re just quietly anchored in the present moment, and they don’t judge that moment as good or bad.

Captive or pet turtles may be different. They can absorb human ways, and sometimes human worries. They can get their minds stuck on something just like we do. But if you ever need to learn (or practice) the art of keeping a quiet mind focused on the present moment, ask a wild sea turtle to help.

It’s easy! Just sit near them (but not too close because you don’t want to invade their space or annoy them), close your eyes, and try to sync your energy vibration with theirs. You may not be able to achieve a completely empty, quiet mind, but you’ll at least get a fleeting glimpse of what it feels like to meditate the sea turtle way.
